The Rhythm of Life + sense:coop (New Collab) @ STRP Biennale 2017
THE RHYTHM OF LIFE & SENSE:COOP (*NEW*) @ STRP Biënnale 2017
STRP BIËNNALE 2017
24TH MARCH – 2ND APRIL 2017
We are excited to be joining STRP Biënnale 2017. We will be exhibiting a newly updated version of The Rhythm of Life, as well as presenting a Masterclass under the moniker of sense:coop – a new cooperative founded by Thought Collider and Sissel Tolaas. Additionally we will be giving a lecture about our work at the STRP Conference. Hope to see you there!
THE RHYTHM OF LIFE
EXHIBIT (24TH MARCH – 2ND APRIL 2017)
What if you could listen in on the chemical communication within your body? What would it sound like? In 2015, Thought Collider, and Dave Young built an intriguing kinetic sound installation around a Photon-Multiplier Tube (PMT). The PMT is an experimental medical device designed to measure biophoton emissions from the skin. Biophotons, or ultra weak light emissions, are used in cell-to-cell communication in plants, bacteria and animals. Invisible to the naked eye, they belong to the electromagnetic spectrum. Placing their hands in the PMT, visitors could listen in on the electrochemical messages transmitted by their bodies, hearing their emissions as complex percussive rhythms. Yet in doing so, they agreed to donate their personal body data to scientific and artistic research.
At STRP Biennale 2017, the data performances of the original 56 participants are replayed publicly for the first time. STRP visitors will be given the opportunity to select and playback these anonymised performances. Doing so, questions to what extent visitors sense themselves within the audio data they hear, thus interrogating the ways in which we attribute meaning and value to body data.
SENSE:COOP W / SISSEL TOLAAS
MASTERCLASS (27TH + 28TH MARCH 2017)
sense:coop is a collaborative incubator for and with the senses, founded by Sissel Tolaas (Smell RE_Search Lab Berlin), Mike Thompson and Susana Cámara Leret (Thought Collider).
This first workshop, 1/365 will focus on the sense of smell. Through hands-on experimentation, we invite you to explore the capacity of our senses beyond our imagination.
ARTISTS TALK 2: THOUGHT COLLIDER
TALK (29TH MARCH)
Thought Collider is an art, design and research practice exploring metabolic processes, bodies and spaces. It comprises the work of Mike Thompson (UK) and Susana Cámara Leret (ES).
